Google’s Move to Replace Passwords with Passkeys as the Default Account Login Method

In May of this year, Google introduced passkeys as a password replacement, aiming to simplify the login process for Google account holders. Now, the tech giant is taking a significant step by setting passkeys as the default login method for Google account users, encouraging them to transition away from traditional passwords.

For those who may not be familiar with passkeys, they represent an innovative approach to authenticating logins on websites and apps. Passkeys utilize Fast IDentity Online (FIDO) credentials stored on a computer or smartphone. These credentials are exclusively revealed to the online account being accessed when the device with the credentials is unlocked, and the user’s identity is confirmed through the device’s PIN or biometrics.

In practical terms, users can gain access to their Google accounts by simply scanning their fingerprint or face on a device or by entering a PIN. This method closely mirrors how these same techniques are used to unlock smartphones.

Google has previously coined passkeys as “the beginning of the end of the password.” The company is actively collaborating with other FIDO Alliance members, including Apple and Microsoft, to establish passkeys as the new industry standard.

In a blog post announcement, Google has expressed its commitment to encourage the tech industry to shift towards passkeys, with the ultimate goal of reducing the reliance on traditional passwords, potentially rendering them obsolete.
